Gavin Bridges
MFA Thesis + Life Update

🎓 Welcome

Hey, I’m Gavin! Thanks so much for stopping by. I’m a Louisiana-based artist, and I’m beyond excited to share a little about my MFA journey, my thesis work, and what’s coming next. This experience has been one of the most transformative and meaningful chapters of my life, filled with challenges, discoveries, and growth. My work is deeply tied to Louisiana’s landscapes, exploring themes of environmental conservation, nature, and the impact of human presence on the natural world.
Through my thesis, I’ve been reflecting on personal experiences, using my art to tell stories that connect memory, emotion, and place. Every piece I create is a conversation—between the past and present, between nature and the discarded, between resilience and vulnerability. I can’t wait to take you along on this journey, share my creative process, and show you what’s coming next. Whether you’ve been following my work for a while or you’re just discovering it now, I’m grateful to have you here. Let’s dive in!

🎨 Thesis Work

“Environmentally Cautious"
My thesis is a series of mixed media landscape paintings focused on Louisiana’s natural environments, particularly the swamps and wetlands that have always felt like home to me, I use traditional painting techniques, combined with collected trash, dried paint peels, and woven macramé elements, materials gathered directly from the real locations I paint,
In these pieces, egrets, blue herons, and other wildlife stand quietly in place of people, witnessing the damage left behind in their habitats, On the surface, the scenes feel peaceful, but there’s an underlying tension between the beauty of the landscape and the disruption caused by human waste,
This body of work is about more than just environmental preservation, It’s also about feelings of abandonment and what it means to be discarded, ignored, or forgotten, whether we’re talking about a place, a creature, or even ourselves,

🌿 Life Lately

Picture
One of the most meaningful moments of my MFA journey was realizing how my art could have an impact beyond myself, What started as a way to process my own feelings of isolation has grown into something bigger, a body of work that resonates with my community and helps spark conversations about how we care for the spaces we share,
Over the past few years, my art has shifted from just observing nature to actively participating in it, Now, it’s not just about painting a landscape, it’s about collecting its remnants, telling its story, and helping others see the beauty and the harm that coexist there,

Shoutouts

This journey wouldn’t have been possible without my people,
My college professors, for pushing me creatively and helping me find clarity in my work,
My mom and my family, for the endless love and support from day one,
My friends, for the laughter, encouragement, and motivation to keep going,
Favorite part of creating in LouisianaIt always comes back to the landscape, There’s something so rich and layered about Louisiana, these quiet swamps, the birds gliding over the water, the history rooted in every tree, It’s impossible not to be inspired by the beauty and the struggle of this place,

🌟 Future Plans

After graduation, I plan to keep painting and expanding on this body of work, I’m also excited to dive deeper into commissions, creating pieces that are meaningful and personal for others,
Long term, I hope to become a university professor and keep sharing what I’ve learned while helping other artists find their voice, And my biggest dream, Opening my own studio space, a place where I can exhibit my work alongside others’, and offer classes and workshops that bring people together through art and community,
As for where I’m going next… I’m just flying by the seat of my pants and seeing where this creative life takes me,
