Artist Statement

My artistic practice is a dynamic reflection of my multifaceted creative energy, which refuses to be confined to a single medium. I embrace the fluidity of my process, weaving between various projects on any given day, each one is a testament to capturing moments and preserving the essence of today's emotions and actions. As a gay man navigating the complexities of growing up in the South, I channel my experiences into painting, particularly focusing on the landscapes of my region. Nature, with its unconditional acceptance and resilience, becomes my canvas for expression, reclaiming what was once lost and standing as a beacon of authenticity.
In each painting, I strive for an element of surprise, inviting viewers into what appears safe and comforting, only to reveal deeper layers of complexity and vulnerability. My work embodies honesty and raw emotion, unafraid to confront the ugly and vulgar aspects of life, as I believe authenticity is paramount to resonating with an audience.
Oil paint is my preferred medium, allowing me the flexibility to manipulate pigments and textures over time. Its forgiving nature grants me the freedom to explore without fear of mistakes, relying on paintbrushes as my trusted tools for mark-making. In solitude, I find clarity, immersing myself in the solitude of my studio to make decisions without external distractions. However, for larger projects, I welcome the insight of trusted friends and family, valuing their perspectives in refining my ideas.
My artistic journey is an ongoing quest for growth and discovery, fueled by a relentless curiosity and openness to new experiences. Each day presents new opportunities for learning and exploration, ensuring that my creative evolution knows no bounds.
